So I followed through and took a leap of faith last Wednesday, purchasing a 40GB PlayStation 3, with Grand Theft Auto 4 and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. Pretty sweet, it looks great on my 42″ Plasma which I am going to have replaced with an equal or larger sized LCD for pure 1080p on HDMI 1.3.

First off, I must say, 2 years ago I made the right decision in my purchase of the 360. It was a solid machine with a great library ready to go. The PS3 just had nothing, mired by excessive hype, poor to mediocre launch titles (and even the games in the first year of launch sucked).

Fast forward to now, and I bought a unit in anticipation of Metal Gear Solid 4 to be released this week. With it, I can replace my 360, DVD, PS2, and Wii (sold) standalone units, freeing up a ton of space in the cabinet, not to mention virtually eliminating the cable jungle behind my TV (since the PS3 can hook up with HDMI- a single cable).

I also traded in all my old gear for credit at GameStop, picking up Tiger Woods 08, Warhawk, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, Virtua Tennis 3 and a Dualshock 3 controller. Uncharted is simply amazing.

I’m not really down with some of the games requiring installation first to be played, like GTA4 and GT5. Both of these ate up 15-20GB on a 40GB drive. That’s simply too much space. Sure, I can upgrade at any time (PS3 takes regular laptop HDDs) but I wish I knew that prior to setting it all up. Perhaps after I complete GT5 and GTA4 I will swap it out for larger storage space.

I must say however that hi definition gaming is definately worth it – now that the games are coming out supporting it (instead of simply upscaling as they had been doing).

Bring on Metal Gear Solid 4. I’ve waited since 1989 to find out how this all ends.
